Watford Borough Council has announced another major step forward in the refurbishment of the iconic Watford Colosseum, with discharge applications recently submitted in advance of the venue’s reopening in autumn 2024.
Pending approval of the applications, alterations which will be made as part of the upgrade include installing an external ventilation duct onto the building, a roof plant and a canopy to the front of the building.
This cherished venue has been undergoing improvements since 2022, and when finished these enhancements will not only preserve its rich heritage but also elevate it to new heights as a cultural and sustainable hub for the local community. The investment will also breathe fresh life into this landmark building, making it more accessible and appealing to local performers, creative individuals, and arts groups.
Upon completion, the investment will bring a boost of nearly £2million to the local economy every year. It will also create new employment and volunteer opportunities, helping the community grow and thrive. The project demonstrates a steadfast commitment to preserving a vital part of Watford’s history while paving the way for significant economic contributions to the region.
Earlier this year, Watford Borough Council chose major entertainment company AEG Presents to manage Watford Colosseum when it reopens next autumn. With more than 350 well known venues worldwide, including The O2 in London, they bring top-notch entertainment – including comedians, live bands, and music shows – to towns and cities across the country.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “We’re excited to announce a major step forward in refurbishing Watford Colosseum, preserving its heritage and turning it into a vibrant hub. This investment will boost the local economy, create jobs and increase volunteer opportunities. With AEG Presents managing the venue, it will bring leading entertainers to Watford. This is part of our plan to revitalise the town centre and make it a vibrant community hub.”
The changes to Watford Colosseum are part of a bigger plan by Watford Borough Council to make the top of the town centre lively and vibrant hub for the community. This plan includes sprucing up the Town Hall, where there will be a new, modern Watford Museum and spaces for the community.
