Watford Borough Council has launched a survey to gather feedback from residents and visitors on the High Street between Watford High Street Station, across Exchange Road and up to the first entrance into atria.
This area has great potential, thanks to its central location in the town, its role as the main entrance into the town centre from the south, the high usage of the nearby Watford High Street Station and being close to the River Colne and open spaces.
However, the current layout of the ring road creates barriers for pedestrians and cyclists, making arriving in the town centre from this direction confusing and not particularly pleasant. Given this is an important part of the town centre, it could be better designed, as well as more attractive and welcoming.
To ensure the ongoing success of Watford town centre, which has been recognised by various national awards, the council are looking into enhancing this area.
It would involve giving it a stronger identity within the town, creating a more attractive and memorable gateway into the town centre from the south, and making it easier and safer to navigate and cross the ring road for pedestrians and cyclists.
The outcome would be enhancements for walking, cycling, public transport, wayfinding, safety and street quality, as well as bringing vibrancy and custom to the businesses based in this part of town.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “We are committed to investing in our vibrant, accessible, and sustainable town centre, and want to hear what the local community thinks of the area around the lower part of the High Street.
“It is so important that residents shape the future of our town. Together, with private sector investors we can improve this part of the town centre so that it is a more welcoming space that reflects our identity, supports connectivity, and enhances the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.”
Councillor Kennedy Rodrigues, Portfolio Holder for Property & Resources said: “Our recent investments in revitalising the town centre, along with Market Street, Queens Road, and King Street underscores our work and investment to ensure the ongoing success of the area.
“Now, we are turning our attention to lower part of the High Street, recognising the importance of continued investment and enhancement to ensure the ongoing vibrancy of our town centre for both present and future generations.”
