Madad UK is a community-driven micro-business delivering exceptional social impact by supporting financially vulnerable individuals with dignity, compassion and practical solutions. Operating at grassroots level, it responds directly to the cost-of-living crisis, where over 14.3 million people in the UK live in poverty and millions lack access to fair financial support.

Madad stores offer affordable clothing, furniture, homewares, small electricals and white goods, keeping pre-loved items out of landfill while supporting local communities. From net proceeds, Madad provides emergency grants of up to £50 for essentials such as food, utilities and clothing, offering immediate relief to those in crisis. This direct intervention prevents escalation into deeper hardship and ensures urgent needs are met quickly. Its model is simple but powerful: targeted, fast, and rooted in trust.
Alongside grants and a benefits checker, Madad provides financial education and guidance, helping individuals build skills to regain financial control. This combination of immediate support and longer-term empowerment ensures sustainable outcomes not just temporary relief.
Madad also demonstrates innovation through its partnership with ZeroPA, enabling access to interest-free loans of £50–£150 for essential goods. This creates a pathway from crisis support to financial independence, allowing individuals to access furniture, clothing and household items without falling into high-cost debt.

Despite operating as a micro-business, Madad delivers significant outcomes through a lean model run entirely by volunteers. This ensures resources are directed straight to beneficiaries, maximising impact. Its Watford and Bedford charity shops, launched rapidly in response to community need, combining retail with a vital community hub.
The shops have been recognised in the BBC as “cost-of-living crisis hubs,” providing affordable goods while connecting individuals to wider support services. They also serve to demonstrate Islamic values of compassion, charity and service to the wider non-Muslim community through practical action.
Madad is now looking to expand stores to Luton and Milton Keynes, with further ambitions in Glasgow. Sadly this growth reflects demand for its services nationally and the scalability of its community-led approach.
The organisation’s impact is both measurable and deeply human. Individuals supported are able to access essential goods, reduce financial stress and avoid exploitative lending. For many, Madad represents a lifeline at a critical moment, restoring dignity and stability.
Madad UK has a strong heritage, marking 45 years of service on 22nd April 2026. Its legacy is closely tied to the vision of the late Imam Irshad Ali, the Chair’s father and the last trustee, ending of an era of dedicated service, with his values continuing to shape Madad’s mission.
Leadership remains values-driven, grounded in compassion, integrity and service. The registered charity operates transparently and efficiently, building trust among beneficiaries, donors and partners, supported by a diverse trustee board of Muslim and non-Muslims.
Madad UK demonstrates that scale is not required to achieve meaningful impact. Through innovation, efficiency and commitment, it delivers transformational outcomes.
Madad UK is delivering an outstanding contribution through volunteer-led excellence and measurable social impact.
We are now looking for additional volunteers for our Watford and Bedford stores, and new premises to open in Luton and MK. Bedford will also be moving by June 16th following the end of their lease.
